Chairman’s Message

Dear Members,

Time flies and we have come to the last Newsletter of the 2016–2017 Society Year.

In the last 4 months, we have had some really great events, so let me just share those moments with you in case you wish to relive or was too busy to attend some of them.

As reported in the last newsletter, a scientific symposium on Nutritional Management in CKD Patients was held on 12 April 2017 and 130 participants heard the wonderful lectures given by Prof. Tarng Der-Cherng (Taiwan) on nutritional recommendations in CKD and Dr. Liliana Garneata (Romania) on the role of ketoanalogues in slowing CKD progression. Their presentations are now available online. Prof. Laurent Juillard (France) gave an interactive lecture on expanded hemodialysis on 30 Aug 2017 which was attended by 155 members.

In collaboration with the HA Central Renal Committee and the Hong Kong College of Physicians, the Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPG) for Renal Service in Hong Kong are in the process of being updated. For those of you who are too young to know, the previous or the original version was first published some 20 years ago, and it is high time for an updated version. Thanks to Prof Philip Li who heads the CRC and the HKCP for leading this worthy initiative. An open forum conducted on the Sunday morning of 2 July 2017 at the Hospital Authority saw an overwhelming turnout of more than 350 clinicians, renal nurses and allied healthcare professionals from both the public and private sectors who patiently listened to and actively engaged in discussions on the presentations embracing the topics of HD, PD, Renal Nursing Care, Infection Control, Transplantation, General Nephrology, Accreditation of Renal Dialysis Units and Renal Registry. The CPG is now being further sharpened and will be put on the websites of HKCP and HKSN from 1 – 31 Oct 2017 for a final round of general consultation. The CPG will then be finalized and published as a supplement to Nephrology by early 2018.

The long-awaited HKSN-led GN Symposium took place on 8 July 2017 in Marco Polo HK Hotel. We were very blessed indeed to have had a full-house attendance from you all (thank you!) to witness 6 world-class lectures delivered by Prof. Peter Mathieson on membranous nephropathy, Prof. Fan Fan Hou (GZ) on CKD in China and the impact of air pollution, Prof. CC Szeto on minimal change disease, Prof. Min Chen (Beijing) on ANCA-associated vasculitis, Prof. Priya Alexander (Mayo Clinic) on complement-mediated glomerulonephritis and Prof. Adrian Liew (Singapore) on the use of biologics in GN. I am happy to report to you that of the 30 evaluation forms (30% return rate) collected, 90% considered the program relevant to their work and held at the right time of year, and 96.7% found the duration appropriate and wanted another symposium of the kind in the future. The full analysis can be viewed here.

In terms of patient-related activities, the annual Hong Kong Renal Patients’ Gateball Competition held on 11 June 2017 at Kowloon Park was surprised by a first-ever kick-off ceremony officiated by the Secretary for Food and Health Dr. Ko Wing Man whose heart has been with our renal patients for a long time.

Finally, the HKSN has supported the following events:

Looking ahead, there will be the following exciting events that you don’t want to miss:

(1) The Annual Scientific Meeting to take place on 1 Oct 2017 will be held for the first time in the Ballroom of Intercontinental Hong Kong Hotel. An exciting program with both local and international flavors has been put together. Also for the first time, we will have a conjoint symposium with the nephrology society of British Columbia (Canada), and the first-ever Asian Pacific Society of Nephrology (APSN)-HKSN CME course one day prior to the ASM on 30 Sep 2017 at the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine in which the HKSN and APSN will jointly sponsor up to 20 young (age < 40) nephrology trainees from low-to-middle income countries around the Asia Pacific region and one trainee from Australia to attend. The CME course is also co-organized with the Hong Kong College of Physicians and we hope physicians from other subspecialties may also benefit from the educational program.

(2) The 19th Beijing/Hong Kong Medical Exchange to be held in Wuhan on 13 Sep 2017 is supported by the HKSN as the title theme this year is Frontiers in Nephropathies and Transplantation featuring speeches from 5 HKSN members.

(3) Don’t forget our equally informative and educational biweekly interhospital meetings.

Last but not least, congratulations to Prof CC Szeto for being awarded 國家科學技術進步獎一等獎!

Till then, have a great start for the new academic year and see you at the ASM and AGM!
